I don't know what your problem is with me, but there are literally thousands of threads on here piggy-backed with 'me too' comments, as you so rudely describe my post, yet I have not read a single reply to any of those stating that they should not do this, so why me? "There will still be no guarantees though that installing the OS hasn't spurred on Hard Drive failure which has been known to happen with updates to later, more CPU demanding OSs." The following was a reply I received on one of my previous comments in another thread and is precisely why I feel my comment is entirely relevant to the OP's question! In the OP's case the Macbook is even older than mine and they should definitely consider this possibility before upgrading. Operating system upgrades do not cause hardware failure. too" comments is unhelpful and considered inappropriate on this site, but to answer your question. Your problems are completely unrelated to the OP's question. I sincerely wish I had stayed at Snow Leopard, when my MBP was absolutely at its best - for everything I have ever wanted or needed to use it for since. Unless there is some feature in El Capitan that you really must have, I would stick with Mountain Lion, if I were you.

Since 'upgrading' to El Capitan it has slowed to the point of being unusable and I am about to trash it 😟 I have tried every 'fix' recommended in the numerous threads about slow EC performance and there is no improvement: I have deleted loads of software (that would be useful occasionally), have no Spotlight, have disabled loads of useful features, but to no avail - more often than not I get beachballing just trying to keep up with my keyboard (and I'm no speed-typist)! It is possible that my hard disc is dying, but if so, I suspect it is El Capitan that pushed it to breaking point, as it was working OK, right up to the point I rebooted after installing El Capitan! It then became painfully slow until I updated to 10.11.3, when it just became absolutely useless as a business tool (and massively stressful and frustrating for anything else - even posting a single low-res image to Facebook or Twitter is now a 15 minute job: mostly waiting for 'Finder' to reveal the content of 'drop-down' menu items and files!)
If you do not see this package available to you, please contact us, as there may be conflicting or incompatible software/hardware conditions on your computer.My experience (with a mid-2010 MBP) is awful. Please see Mojave support details before upgrading.

If you would like to upgrade your computer yourself, you can use the Self Service App. Self Service has an installation package available to upgrade from Sierra (and newer) to Mojave. As a result, SCSCF will stop providing software support for all computers running macOS 10.12 Sierra on October 31st, 2019. Later this year, Apple is expected to introduce a new replacement for 10.14 Mojave, Sierra will be the third oldest version and will cease to be supported. SCSCF software support charges will be canceled automatically as of Novem. Additionally, computers identified as security risks may be blocked from the CMU network by the Information Security Office (ISO). Please note: if you choose not to upgrade your computer, it will not receive security patches or functionality updates and our ability to troubleshoot issues will be limited.
